My dear Mrs Elwell
Your kind letter of 10th came duly to hand. I have been trying to get a chance to visit Springfield and see you for a long time but I have been more of a slave than ever the last year. I visited you the last time I was in Springfield to stop and saw cousin William then for the last time.
I expected then to see him again a good many times. Although his death was not entirely unexpected the news of it came upon us suddenly at last when we returned from Newport where we have been for a few days visiting “Nelly” We of course did not get the Springfield papers until we returned
